Macher Jhol is a Bengali home affair. It's made in every Bengali household almost every day. It is very low is spices and the gravy is very runny, similar to a stew. It makes a good comfort food in winter. Also, fish is good for health as it is high in protein and good fats!

    Ingredients to make Macher Jhol:

    Fish (cut into pieces), turmeric powder, salt, mustard oil, sesame seeds, cumin powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, potatoes, water

    Steps to make Macher Jhol:

    1. In a large bowl marinate the fish pieces with turmeric powder and salt or 5 minutes.

    2. Meanwhile heat the mustard oil to smoking point and fry till both the sides are crisp. This will take about 10 minutes. Remove and keep aside.

    3. In another wok, heat 2 tbsp of mustard oil till smoking point.

    4. Reduce the heat and add the sesame seeds.

    5. Make a paste of cumin powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, and red chili powder with 1 tbsp of water or more.

    6. Add this mixture to the oil along with salt and fry till oil separates from the spice mixture.

    7. Add 1½ cup of water and add the sliced potatoes.

    8. Cook covered till the potatoes are done.

    9. Add the fried fish pieces and cook till it comes to a boil.

    10. Cook covered for 5 minutes.

    Serve hot. It will be very yummy!
